ABSTRACT

Six fresh hand milked camel milk samples were tested for their suitability for human consumption on the basis of the EU regulation No. 853/2005 for bovine milk. The samples originated from 6 different Saudi Arabian camel breeds and were purchased from street vendors in Riyadh. Their mean TPC was 1.6 x 10³ cfu/ml and their mean SCC was 1.4 x 104 cells/ml. They were also CMT negative indicating no mastitis. Their GGT was high which is an indication that the samples were not heat treated. Their fat and lactose contents were in the reference ranges, but their Vitamin C content was low.
